Whitefish Review Issue #7 Features Interview with Author John Irving

June 24 event includes a reading by Whitefish author Laura Munson

Whitefish Review, Issue #7 and Laura Munson Reading WHITEFISH, Mont. (June 15, 2010) - Whitefish Review kicks off the launch of issue #7 on June 24 with a reading by local author Laura Munson, from her new book, This Is Not The Story You Think It Is: A Season of Unlikely Happiness. The memoir was published in April 2010 by Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam and recently visited #18 on The New York Times best seller list. An interview with Munson is included in the new issue.

The celebration happens at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake, outside by the lake under the tent pavilion. The evening will run from 7 to 11 p.m., with Munson reading a selection of her work at 8 p.m. Copies of both Munson's book and the new issue of Whitefish Review will be on sale.

In issue #7, Whitefish Review runs a landmark interview with author John Irving, one of America's most widely-read novelists. His writing, says author Peter Matthiessen in a New York Times Book Review piece, "has a sense of myth and time and weight and resonance. He's certainly not just 'a good plot man'. He's probably the great storyteller of American literature today."

"We are humbled by Mr. Irving's willingness to help us as he left for his book tour in Europe to promote his twelfth novel, Last Night in Twisted River," said editor-in-chief, Brian Schott. "After three years of hard work, our non-profit journal has really hit its stride."

Whitefish Review has introduced two new sections to the journal this summer. First, a new segment which features conversations between prominent authors. In this case, Rick Bass (Missoula) and Doug Peacock (Emigrant), two of the West's finest writers and naturalists talk in and around Yellowstone National Park about the writing life and wild things.

The second new addition is an opportunity for writers to report on significant occurrences from different viewpoints. President Barack Obama visited Montana last summer and two correspondents offer essays on their interactions with the President - first while fly fishing (Dan Vermillion/Livingston), and next, while operating a hotel elevator (Madeleine Bessire/Big Sky).

This issue also features other remarkable essays by writers like Cristina Eisenberg (Bigfork) - doing groundbreaking work with wolf populations, as well as Douglas H. Chadwick (Whitefish), giving readers a glimpse into his adventures with the endangered wolverine in Glacier National Park.

"In addition to publishing the work of famous writers, we are also dedicated to publishing emerging artists, from the high school level, graduate school and beyond," said Schott. "We take great pride in discovering fresh talent and playing a role in their growth as artists."

Local student work featured in this issue includes an essay by Whitefish High School junior Stella Holt, a story about being airlifted from Glacier National Park's Mount Gould. Two winners of the Authors of the Flathead Student Writing Contest are also included - Kalispell senior Alexa Schnee (fiction) and Bigfork junior Kate Lamm (poetry).

17 of the 34 artists and writers featured in this issue are based in Montana. Montana writers included in #7 are George Ostrom (Kalispell), Jim Clarke (West Glacier), and Richard Rice (Bitterroot Valley). Visual artists and photographers include Hannah Bissell (Kalispell), Amanda Guy (Bozeman), Lance Schelvan (Missoula), Greg Thomas (Ennis), and Lindsey Davis Ward (Kalispell).

Whitefish Review is a nationally-acclaimed non-profit literary journal created to publish the distinctive literature, art, and photography of mountain culture. The 150-page soft-cover journal includes a 12-page color section and is published twice yearly.

Copies of Whitefish Review are available in bookstores across Montana and the Mountain West and online. Cost is $12, with back issues and subscriptions also available.
