Patrick Muri was born in Butte, raised below “Hill 57” in Great Falls, and moved to the dreary railroad town of Whitefish when Johnson was president. He attended college until he won a lottery, became a ski bum, supported by work in power-line construction throughout Montana and western states. He was involved with the early telemark skiing on Big Mountain and lost interest in the confined treadmill of area skiing. He has ski mountaineered in the Alps, the Rockies, and Selkirks of Canada, and in his back yard of northwest Montana. Someone once asked him if he had lived here all his life and he answered, “Nope, not yet.”
